The fleet encounters trouble as it makes its way back to Skafrax for water.

Story Summary

The fleet heads back to Skafrax to get much-needed water, knowing there's a trap lying in wait there. To make matters worse, a Cylon force is pursuing them and the Celestial Lady develops engine problems. The fleet can't wait for the ship to make repairs, so the occupants are evacuated and a plutonium bomb placed on board to take out as much of the Cylon force as possible. The plan is successful, while Colonial Vipers destroy many more Cylon Raiders. The remaining Cylon force flees.

Now, the fleet will have to face whatever awaits on Skafrax.

This story appeared in the British book Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack, a book of short stories and articles all about BSG, geared towards kids. The title of the book is derived from a 1979 theatrical release in Europe which combined the episodes "The Living Legend" Parts 1 and 2 and "Fire in Space" into one movie.

"Skirmish Beyond Skafrax" is part three of a 4-part story which began in "Switch in Space", continued in "Planet of the Cyclops", and continues here.

Similarly to the events in "Collision Course", the Colonials, after evacuating the inhabitants, sacrifice a ship of the fleet, the Celestial Lady (which was having engine trouble anyway), to take out a bunch of pursuing Cylons, placing a plutonium bomb aboard her. This brings the fleet down to 214 ships from the last count of 215 in "The Magnificent Warriors".
